Julie Andrews and The Helicopter

During the filming of “Sound of Music”, when the title song was being filmed, Julie Andrews was taken by helicopter and stranded, on her own, on top the beautiful mountain we all remember.

The helicopter then proceeded to fly towards, and over, Julie as she sang “The Sound of Music”, with a cameraman filming her as she walked across the beautiful grass-soaked mountaintop.  The scenery is spectacular, Julie looks great, everything went exceedingly well … except for one small thing.

Every time the helicopter finished its filming run, it would immediately turn and return to its original starting point, so it could repeat the process once more.  And every time it turned, it was so close to Julie Andrews that the force of its downwind literally knocked the singing actress flat on her face.

Over and over again, Julie tried to steady herself against the powerful thrust of wind … and every time she fell flat on her face.  She couldn’t understand why the helicopter pilot didn’t make a wider circle and let her stay vertical and calm.  Eventually she shook her fists at him and pantomimed the helicopter making a much wider turn.  The pilot merely waved and made his usual tight turn with the helicopter, causing a fierce downwind that, yet again, knocked the unprotected actress down.

It felt like a very long day.

Julie acknowledges the beauty of the scene.  She also acknowledges that she spent much of her time off-camera with her face in the dirt, and her mouth full of grass.  To this day, she is still thankful that the day of its filming finally ended.
