I’m Not a Mad Mother

Husband at work, three children at school,
Baby splashing in bath, on the floor there’s a pool
Four year old is playing, please don’t make a mess.
I’m going out; still have to put on a dress.

The door bell is ringing, who can that be?
It’s so inconvenient but I’ll have to go see.
Please not a visitor; I don’t have the time.
I want to go out, is that such a crime?

There stands two ladies, each with prayer book.
They give me a smile, they want me to look.
They go door to door, and have come to save me.
They’d like to do it while sipping some tea.

I say please forgive me but I’m awfully busy.
Can’t they see I’m all of a tizzy?
I have a wet baby wrapped in a towel.
And now I can hear baby starting to howl.

Is it your baby, they wanted to know.
Oh how I wished I could tell them to go
I gave them my answer, yes it is mine.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I don’t have the time.

How old is the baby, is the next question they ask.
I surely must go; I have yet to finish my task.
Two months is my answer. Now I must away
I want to go out … and I hope it's today.

Next question is, is it a boy or is it a girl?
I don’t know the answer. My head’s in a swirl.
I exclaim,” Oh it’s a girl!” as under the towel I peek.
Then the ladies gave out a horrible shriek.
With their psalm books in hand they quickly did flee
They ran down the garden path, just missing a tree
Then I started to laugh as suddenly I see.
Those two ladies are actually frightened of me.

I know what it was that gave them a fright.
It was a small misunderstanding, ever so slight.
I forgot to tell them … I was in such a hurry.
The reason, dear ladies, is I’m in such a flurry

You see my baby’s a twin, the others her brother.
My dear baby boy’s in the bedroom, awaiting his mother.
You see dear ladies, when you have a double.
It really is … twice as much trouble.
I’m not a mad woman who’s taken to drink.
I’m just so busy; I can’t even think.
So may life bless you, as it did me
And, next time you come, I'll invite you to tea.
